Great Fishing at Point Lookout

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Lower Bay
Location: Point Lookout

I have been fishing with friends down at Point Lookout every chance I get lately since the fishing up here in Annapolis hasnt compared to what is available down there. On Friday, December 11, I fished with a friend on his Judge 27 out of Point Lookout State Park. We got our limit of 8 rockfish, 22-28, trolling a full spread with planer boards all morning in 40-80 of water it was slow going with only 3 in the box and a handful of throwbacks until we spotted birds and a growing fleet of boats on the eastern edge of the channel just before noon. As we approached and started steadily marking fish up high in the water column in 60-80, we quickly finished out our limit and threw back another 8-10 keepers as we pulled in the trolling gear. We were running mostly 6 baits behind umbrellas. As soon as we got the trolling gear in we ran to the diving birds and jigged a dozen or so fish, mostly on 10 BKDs on 1.5oz jigheads. These fish caught jigging were mostly mid to upper 20s and the one pictured fish that I caught was 32. The bite window was very narrow only lasting a total of about an hour, but it was a great day and well worth the 2 hour drive south!
