Yellow Perch Spawn

Type: Tidal
Region: Central
Location: Tidal River

Took advantage of this beautiful winter day and headed north on Route 40 out of Baltimore City. Stopped at a few smaller creeks and ponds and then hit a pretty popular spot in search of crappie. For almost 5 hours I had the river to myself. Upon arrival at the river, it was obvious the yellow perch spawn was on as egg sacks were covering most debris in the river. The fish were finicky at first but eventually started biting on a 1/32 jig twitched on the bottom. I caught over 120 fish in 4 hours of fishing. Most of the perch were smaller males, but there were about 7-8 females and males over 9" in the mix. The largest measured 10.5". All were released to fight another day. The warming water had all the fish on the move. There were numerous schools of 600-1000 fish in the 5-8" range in the eddies of the swift water. Probably one of the thickest aggregations of males that I've ever seen. It was a great way to spend this warm winter day.
