Brook Trout Fishing at Poplar Lick

Type: Nontidal
Region: Western
Location: Poplar Lick

After a long Garrett County winter, I took a day off and fished Poplar Lick within the Savage River Watershed's Zero Creel Limit for Brook Trout special trout fishing area. The fishing was great, as each pool or deeper run producing at least a fish or strike on the Elk Hair Caddis dry-fly or the dropper bead-head caddis larva fly. Most of the brook trout were in the 7 to 9 inch size class, and were still brightly colored. Poplar Lick is an excellent brook trout fishing destination within the Savage River State Forest, as a walk-in only trail with primitive camping exists from the headwaters to where it empties into the Savage River. Pictured are a couple of the brookies and my new fishing partner Ziggy.
