One of the Best Days Ever

Type: Nontidal
Region: Southern Maryland
Location: Lake Lariat

Hello from southern Maryland.

The weather this week has been taunting me as I sat in my classroom waiting for Easter Break to begin. It finally did this afternoon, and I took full advantage of it. Getting out of school a little early I put the kayak on the top of the car and headed to Lake Lariat. The breeze this afternoon kept me moving until I was able to duck behind a few outcroppings of trees. Now as any angler does, I keep track of the number of fish I catch. But being the total "fish nerd" that I am, I also like to keep an eye on how many different species I can catch each time I'm out. I've multiple days with three and even four. I think I've been on the bay and caught as many as five. But on freshwater I have never done better than a "slam" - four different species. Well today while casting a small 1/16 oz jig with a copper colored tube, with some glitter in it, i was able to catch SIX different species. Each of the fish caught were in anywhere from 2 to 5 ft of water as best as I could tell. All of the fish seemed to be holding around the tops of fallen trees, with maybe the redear sunfish being more in a small basin. All of the fish were released to continue to get ready for their "honeymoons", so that more fish can be caught in the future. My best fish of the day was the channel catfish I caught which measured close to 18 inches. I got a few crappie right around 9 or 10 inches and most of the bass were under 12". Actually the first fish I caught today was the close to 11 inch yellow perch. If this is any sign of what is to come this season I'm going to go crazy waiting for school to get out each day. Tight lines!
