False Alarm on Mussel

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Baltimore
Location: Baltimore Harbor

Question: Here is a shot of what appear to be zebra mussels that came off of a work float that had been in the water for about 2 years here in Baltimore Harbor. Wanted to see if you could confirm or deny. Thanks, Mike Bonicker, Baltimore, MD.

DNR Response: They appear to be dark false mussels. They have concentric rings instead of jagged markings, they are not very tall for their length, and the second one from the right is rolled onto its side. If it were a zebra mussel it would sit up straight. Let me know if they want any follow up, but those are exhibiting some pretty distinct characters. Glad there is concern and watchful eyes even if it is a false (no pun intended) alarm.
