Angler question: I was fly fishing Friends Creek yesterday and was surprised to find so many large crayfish, hellgrammites, and this insect. It was huge. Sorry for the poor photo, but is this a golden stonefly nymph ? I had an imitation that looked really similar to it , tumbled it into the head of a pool and immediately got a nice rainbow who couldnt resist. Jim Delle Bovi, Columbia, Maryland
DNR Response:The picture of the stonefly is a Great Brown Stonefly - the "golden stonefly" is a west coast species. The artificial pattern for both works equally well, but the east coast variety tends to be a little smaller than the west coast variety.
