My daughter Jessica and I spent a great day on Broadford Lake in Garrett County catching plenty of feisty bluegills! We located a shallow sandy area next to some rushes and plopped an elk-hair caddis fly a couple of feet from the edges of the emergent vegetation. Within a few seconds, the bluegills were porpoising out of the water to grab the fly! We lost count on the number of fish landed, and there were a few black crappies that also took the fly. We also tried a deeper area using bead-head nymphs, and landed a few nice post-spawn female bluegills as well. A common loon must have seen all the action and came swimming in for a closer look!
