Location: Kings Creek, off Nanjemoy
I have attached photos of something that my mother caught in Kings Creek, off of Nanjemoy Creek, on May 29. We thought that it was a skate, but upon further inspection of the photos, it doesnt look like one. Can you tell me what it is?
DNR Response: Hello Penny, based on the pictures, it does not appear to be a cownose ray or "skate". It looks like one of the species of stingray that feeds on the bottom in coastal/ocean waters and sometimes enters the lower bay. This could be an Atlantic, bluntnose, roughtail, or southern stingray.
