25,000 walleye fry were stocked into the lower Susquehanna River at Lapidum last week. Abundant food in the river should allow these fish to grow rapidly. Walleye fishing in the river has become quite popular, and I always get lots of questions about them. Here is a quick synopsis of what we know. At this time we have no evidence that natural reproduction is successful below Conowingo Dam. This doesnt mean it doesnt occur, but we simply cant say for sure. Walleye require fairly specific conditions to spawn successfully. These conditions are more prevalent in upstream areas. Although we annually stock the river with fry or fingerlings, the Dam fish lift data suggests that years of good reproduction in upstream areas, coupled with high flow events in early spring creates good walleye fishing in following years when the fish reach catchable size. As a result, anglers can expect periods of good fishing as well as poor fishing for walleye below the Dam over the long term.
