The Freshwater Fisheries Program staff and two Garrett College students recently conducted a fish population survey in New Germany Lake in Garrett County. This 10 acre lake boasts an abundant population of hand-sized pumpkinseeds and bluegills - fish any beginning angler can easily catch! Also, we collected many chunky yellow perch - a lot of them in the 8 to 9 inch size class. Largemouth bass are the top gamefish in the lake, and anglers may want to consider practicing catch and release with the bass as they help keep the abundant panfish populations in check. The lake teams with wildlife - we saw a beaver, a snapping turtle, a mother wood duck with her four ducklings in tow, Great Blue Herons, and lots of green frogs during the survey - a place worth checking out!
