This morning, before sunrise, we saw at least 25 different pods of dolphin near Thomas Point. I have only ever seen 1 in 17 years let alone 25 whole pods!!
Is this normal?
DNR Response:We receive reports of dolphin pods (from pods as small as 6 animals to 80+ animals) many times throughout the summer, so this is definitely not uncommon. Dolphins migrate into our area following food sources into the Bay and it's tributaries each year- typically between May and October when water temperatures are at their warmest. Not only do they follow schools of fish, but they are very intelligent animals known to follow watermen and commercial fishing vessels. They typically remain in the area as long as food sources are abundant.
We definitely appreciate reports- folks can take photos, videos, etc. and forward to MD DNR or to the National Aquarium.

We would also like to remind anyone reporting sightings to please admire the animals from a distance, as they are protected through Federal Law (Marine Mammal Protection Act), and they shouldn't do anything that could be considered harassment (following animals, trying to touch or feed them).
