On Saturday, July 15th, I went down to Nan's Cove on the Patuxent River. When I got there, I dropped my minnow trap in the water and loaded up the kayak. I ended up catching close to four dozen mummichogs and I used them to catch close to a dozen white perch and one 15 or so inch rockfish (photo). As I reached into the minnow bucket one time I felt something a little different. Unfortunately whatever it was didn't survive in the bucket. I'm writing because I've never seen a fish like it before. Any idea what species it might be?
Department of Natural Resources Reply: This fish is a large striped killifish (Fundulus majalis), and probably a female, based on the markings.
