Region: Southern
Location: Patuxent River
I spent a little time on the Patuxent River just after high tide today. I caught a few white perch using a curly tail grub around a couple of docks. I also caught this guy. I was wondering if this might be what some people call a "wiper" or a hybrid between a white perch and a striper (rockfish)? Any help you can give would be appreciated? Also if it is does it have its own genus and species? DNR Answer: Hi David, no this is not a hybrid striped bass or "wiper". Hybrid striped bass have a more rounded body shape along with the broken stripes. It is just a regular striped bass (Morone saxatilis) with broken stripes. I have seen this in many Chesapeake striped bass, and it is not uncommon.
