Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center Kid's Fishing Derby

Type: Nontidal
Region: Eastern
Location: CBEC ponds, Grasonville

Under the category of "what did you do this summer" - Hallie and Ethan Zlokovitz (ages 12 and 10) had a great time at the 1st Annual Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center Kid's Fishing Derby back in late August in Grasonville. It was one of the best run kids derbies I've seen in the last 15 years while working for the department, and the fishing action on hungry bass and bluegill was non-stop. So, for combination of being well-run, and for actually CATCHING FISH and bending rods, it was top-notch. Hallie caught 3 largemouth bass ranging from 13-15 inches in about 10 minutes, just using nightcrawlers (worms) under a bobber. Ethan lost a 16 inch bass, but was on fire with nice bluegill. Hallie won the trophy for longest largemouth bass in the 12 year old girl's division, and Ethan won the trophy for longest bluegill for 10 year old boys. Vicki Paulas Assistant Director from Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center and Tony Friedrich did a great job putting the event together, along with the great guys from Bass Pro and retired Department of Natural Resources Biologist Rudy Lukacovic.
