Sean's Fly Fishing Journal for Last Week.

Type: Nontidal
Region: Southern
Location: Multiple locations

10/10/17, Savage Park
Water level was pretty low. Lots of rocks and no real pools to speak of. Had one bite on a squirmy wormy, but missed the set. Very pretty area though.

10/11/17, Savage Mill
There are lots of sunfish hanging around the mill. The largest caught was 7" on a squirmy wormy. Fish were interested in a black wooly bugger, but none were interested enough to bite it. The water was fairly clear, and there is a nice pool right next to the old structure jutting out into the river near the bridge. The current is fast a little upstream, so try streamers there as your line will belly out before your dry flies can get any strikes.

10/12/17, Scotts Cove ramp
It was a cool, overcast day, seemingly ideal for catching fish. As boat after boat passed me along the shore, the general consensus was "no fish to be found." There were fish rising towards the middle of the reservoir near the boat launch, but none of them were interested in what I was tossing. The shoreline is riddled with thick weeds about 3 feet out, which is where I managed to catch a 10" largemouth bass. Another took a bite at my fly, but spat it out before I could set the hook. After changing between lots of flies, the olive swimming baitfish was the winner, triggering both strikes.

10/14/17, Upper Gunpowder Falls
Since the Upper Gunpowder was stocked with rainbows this past week, I figured I'd give it a try. I started at the bridge along Lower Glencoe Rd and worked a quarter mile downstream. The downstream current is slow, but the water is fairly shallow. I caught three rainbows in pools under shoreline trees before working back upstream. I worked a mile upstream of the bridge and back and stopped counting when I hit 20 fish. Since these were all stocked fish, the longest was 7". I passed multiple spin fisherman along the way who weren't catching anything. The fish were particularly interested in my olive elk hair caddis fly, but also enjoyed my flying ant pattern. Most fish were hanging out along the shoreline in the small pools underneath trees.

I stopped by the catch & release section of the Gunpowder at the bridge along Falls rd. It was close to dark so I didn't cast out, but did run into another fly angler who caught 10 nice browns, also on an elk hair caddis with an ant tied in tandem. Although some fish were still rising close to sunset, they stopped taking dry flies, supposedly switching to subsurface midges.
