The past two weeks have been great for rainbow trout at two local ponds in Calvert County. Fishing at Hutchins pond (2.5 acres) and Calvert Cliffs pond (1.5 acres), both of which have been stocked recently with 450 trout each. Although I had been told by one angler that he had caught two brown trout (Calvert Cliffs) I have only caught rainbow trout myself, I catch and release all fish.
As expected, the trout fishing has dropped off over the last two weeks from heavy fishing (I have seen Anglers come and take their limits more time than not) and the fish are getting a lot smarter. Most fish that Ive seen people catching have been using Power Baits. Although most fish Ive taken have been on dry flys (woolly bugger) and a few on nymph.
Ive caught over 50 rainbow trout, all nice fish, keep in mind these are put-and-take fish, limit of five fish. Some of them suffer from fin rot but that shouldnt stop you from eating them.
I've caught two largemouth bass and plenty of those pesky bluegill and sunfish too. Bluegill at Hutchins Pond are of good size and would make a nice meal.
I did have two good size largemouth hit my sunfish on the way in, one breaking my 4 pound test tippet and the other giving up my sunfish after a short fight. I estimate they weighed 3/4 pounds, one at each pond. Fun stuff!
