Gar or Not?

Type: Tidal
Region: Central
Location: Susquehanna River

Ive been fishing on the lower Susquehanna for over 65 years. This is the first time that Ive seen one of these critters. I caught this Gar close to the Rock Run tributary while fishing for Hickory Shad.

I thought the readers of the Angler's Log might be interested in seeing some of the strange critters that can be pulled from the waters of the Susquehanna River.

DNR Response: This is a small Atlantic needlefish, not a gar. They have been seen as far north as Carpenter Point at the north end of the Susquehanna Flats, so it seems reasonable that one may stray into the lower Susquehanna River.
