I hadn't fished the Potomac River in quite sometime. So when my good friend Danny called me up and asked if I would be interested in getting out early Saturday morning on the Potomac I graciously accepted.
We hit the road around 6:30 am, and were at our spot along the shores of the mighty Potomac by 6:45 am. We fished on the MD side close to the DC border. The weather was overcast, with rain "spitting" on and off - but nothing too serious. The temperature was comfortable - I would say in mid 60's. The one thing that was overly certain though was that Danny and I were ready to catch some fish.
It didn't take long before we got into some fish. We totaled 8 fish on the day. I caught two small largemouths, and one smallmouth - none of which we deemed picture worthy. Danny caught a small mouth, a shad (which he side swiped), a decent sized crappie, and a good sized cat fish. But what made the this day special was the Snakehead that Danny reeled in.
Early on we witnessed a fellow fisher reel in a 2.5 foot snakehead right next to us. Out of the three of us there, none of us had caught a snakehead before - but we all knew it had to be killed. This guy decided to position the fish between some rocks where it could not escape - and continue on fishing until he thought of a good way to kill it. About an hour later we saw a guy from the VA side reel in another large snakehead. He quickly pulled out a large knife and ended it's life. No more than 5 minutes after that Danny hooked his first snakehead, he killed the fish. The VA guy pulled one more snakehead out of the water and that one as well.
Great day fishing, and 4 less snakeheads in the Potomac - doesn't get much better than that.
