Dolphins!

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Central
Location: Middle Bay

While we were chumming in the Middle Bay (Pidickory, Swan Point, Bay Bridge) on July 4, we saw zero fish. However, we did catch something on the camera that we were not expecting. At least two dolphins were working the area between the Sturgeon Research Buoy and the Western Bay Bridge Island. It was fascinating to see them swim around us, and one full breach occurred.

I got lucky and captured two ok images. I'm not sure if this is something that is becoming more common in the Middle Bay, but I've never seen it before!

DNR Answer: "Based on our sightings/strandings, I wouldn't say mid-Bay (or North of the Bay Bridge) is a rare occurrence or completely unheard of at all! I had many sightings (and even a few strandings) last year in Baltimore County (off Hart-Miller Island), our most recent manatee was at the Dundalk Marine Terminal, and I have had a stranded Loggerhead Turtle up the Susquehanna (at Havre de Grace)." --Amanda Weschler, Department of Natural Resources Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Stranding Coordinator
