Rock Bass from the Susquehanna

Type: Tidal
Region: Central
Location: Susquehanna River

While fishing out of Havre De Grace on the Susquehanna River last weekend, I caught ( and released) several of these rock bass (Ambloplites rupestris). Additionally I caught at least a dozen channel catfish around the bridge pilings. Most of those were averaging 5 lbs. All fish were caught on a simple bottom rig using a one ounce sinker and piece of night crawler. Although the boat traffic was heavy, the action was consistent all afternoon. Tight lines! (*DNR Note- The rock bass, Ambloplites rupestris, also known as the rock perch, goggle-eye, or red eye, is a species of freshwater fish in the sunfish family, and can be distinguished from other similar species by the six spines in the anal fin. Other sunfish have only three anal fin spines. Rock bass are sometimes confused with the warmouth, Lepomis gulosus, because they are similar in general body shape and coloration. )
