Ideas and Suggestions For Catching Snakeheads

Type: All
Region: All
Location:

This entry is in response to a number of anglers request for information regarding catching northern snakeheads. Currently the promotion to ask anglers to catch and kill snakeheads has proven successful and has also solicited many quesitons. One of the goals of the promotion was to help gather the very information fellow anglers are asking, such as where and when are the best times to catch snakeheads, what's the best bait, etc.. Curious anglers should review the snakehead entries for clues to success, if you type "Snakeheads" in the search box above you'll get all the snakehead entries.

One of our biologist on the frontline conveyed some cursory information which may prove helpful. Snakeheads seem to move upstream during highflows and settle back down during the lowflow summer months. Most of the snakeheads caught to date were caught by bass fishermen so that leads us to believe snakeheads hit on the same bait/lures as bass. Snakeheads also are caught along edges and from within vegetation. Below is a distribution map showing where northern snakeheads have been captured.

To find a boat ramp nearest to where you'd like to try your luck go to our boat ramp guide or try a state park like Fort Smallwood.
