Some Sunday Pond Fishing

Type: Nontidal
Region: Southern
Location: Pond

My grandson, Isaac, called around noon today asking if Id take him fishing. I loaded up the two person kayak and went his way. He was surprised that I brought the kayak and that we were going to do some bass fishing. We simply dropped it into the pond in his neighborhood rather than fight weekend traffic at a public fishery.

I lent him one of my spinning reels and rod, he owns a spin cast setup but I was thinking he needed to graduate to a better rig. I hooked him up with a plastic frog for some afternoon top water fishing. He hooked into a nice bass but learned the importance of keeping the rod tip up. Bass came right off after he showed Isaac his color, to add a little insult.

Then, I put a shallow billed hard bait on his line. He caught a 13 inch crappie and had hooked up with another bass, but the bass popped off after making a last minute deep dive.

I caught five bass and lost a few others on a Whopper Plopper and wacky worm but, it was good afternoon of hot July pond fishing.

The water was still silty with moss growth building up. We need some rain to cool down the water and fill these ponds up a little.
