The Savage River Trophy Trout Fishing Area is back down to normal summer flows, about 55 cubic feet per second, and makes for easier wading in this rather slippery stream. I fished the lower end of the river recently, using a yellow-bodied elk-hair caddis with a bead-head olive caddis emerger pattern. I fished the pocket water with a short leader, and caught plenty of colorful brown trout and one brook trout. Most of the fish were taken on the dry fly, but several did take the dropper fly making worthwhile to fish with both flies.
