I went to Assateague at the end of August for some surf fishing and had a great time. I caught a pompano (see photos) and was wondering about citations and records for a fish not usually caught off of MD. It seems that the way the water keeps warming up, we'll all be seeing more of these kind of catches. PS. I also did some fishing closer to home, and caught a 5 and 8 lb channel catfish under the Rt 50 bridge between piling 2 and 3 from the north side, using cut spot for bait caught there in the same area.
DNR Answer: This is the second pompano (Trachinotus carolinus) reported to the Angler's Log this summer. They are not a major commercial species in Maryland, but are a great sport fish, and are found in the surf zone and lower Bay waters during July and August, where they feed on sand fleas, crabs, shrimp and shellfish.
