Largemouth Bass Fishing In Calvert County Ponds
Type: Nontidal
Region: Southern
Location: Calvert County ponds
I set out to challenge myself today by doing some largemouth bass fishing at four Calvert County ponds. Great day!!
- Pond one: Fresh Creek, or rather the smaller pond that is connected via an under road culvert located on Clubhouse Dr. I caught one bass there estimated to be 5 1/2lbs. I used a white spinner bait. The water was cloudy and out of the banks. I left there due to the high winds coming off of the bay.
- Pond two:This pond supplies water to the Chesapeake Hill Golf Clubs irrigation system. I caught one small bass there and had two blowups while using a Whopper Plopper and plastic frog. The water in this pond was cloudy too, high and is weed choked with Hydrilla, but fishable with top water baits.
- Pond three: Calvert Cliffs Pond is very clear but out of its banks. I caught six fish there on a white spinner bait and Whopper Plopper. Most of the fish I caught were relatively small. The larger bass were caught on a spinner bait.
- Pond four: Located in Prince Frederick, it is a private pond off of German Chapel Rd. I caught six bass there using a wacky worm, chartreuse spinner bait and Whopper Plopper. No kidding, on my last cast I caught a 6.5 - 7lb bass! The pond was out of its bank like the others due to all of the rain from the weekend and very cloudy.
One common point with respect to all four venues, the bass were biting where the water flowed in to the ponds, not that I didnt catch bass elsewhere. However, the bite was on where the water was cooler, more oxygen and bait fish present.
