On Sunday, September 16, I decided to go over to Myrtle Grove Wildlife Management Area to fish the pond and lake.
I fished the pond first. The pond (10 acres) is 0.7 miles from the parking lot, but the walk is on a pea gravel road so it is very doable. The pond was way out of its banks which made fishing somewhat difficult seeing that any clear accessible area on the bank was now under water. Most of the bank was overgrown with brush, but the water was clear and weed free. That said, I caught seven bass, a majority of them on a skirted jig. Although, I did catch one on a Whopper Plopper and another on a chatterbait. Most weighed about a pound or right under a pound.
As for the lake, (23 acres) it is weed choked. I thought I could use a whopper plopper. But it didnt matter where I cast it, it either didnt return to the surface after the cast or hung up on hydrilla on the retrieve. I did get one blow up on a frog, but I think I was thinking about a slice of pizza being it was after lunch time and I hadnt eaten yet. So, the lake was a colossal miss.
I didnt take the my kayak to the lake because I thought I might get caught in the rain/thunder showers. The lake has a boat ramp and next time I head out there Ill take the kayak. I'm thinking mid/late fall might be a better time.
As for the pond, I may take my bike and kayak towing setup and tow it down to the pond. There may be some big fish in there!
