Conowingo Reservoir

Type: Nontidal
Region: Northern
Location: Conowingo Reservoir

We went out electrofishing on Conowingo Reservoir (some call it the Pool) yesterday. Surprisingly, the water was only off color, but not too muddy. With these high flows, there was a definite current flowing downstream. It quickened when the Dam began generating about 11am or so. Fishermen who want a change of pace should really give it a shot! We saw many beautiful smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, a few walleye and some monster bluegills. Attached is a picture of Dan Hinder, Fisheries Technician and 2 nice largemouths.

A couple of important notes for all anglers:

Zebra mussels have been found in Conowingo Reservoir. Make sure thoroughly drain and dry your boat and equipment before its next use. http://dnr.maryland.gov/invasives/zebramussel.pdf

Flathead catfish are becoming more abundant here. Please harvest all that you encounter. These voracious predators are bad news for our ecosystems, but they are tasty, so please keep and eat them. http://dnr.maryland.gov/invasives/index.asp

Public boat ramps can be found on Conowingo Creek (Cecil) and Broad Creek (Harford). http://www.dnr.maryland.gov/boating/susquehannariver_upper.asp
