Snakehead at Blackwater

Type: Tidal
Region: Eastern
Location: Blackwater River

I fished the Little Blackwater River yesterday (4/23/19) off Egypt Rd near Cambridge, Maryland. Using a top water frog, and casting as far back into the grasses and lily pads as possible I was able to catch three snakehead. I had hooked an additional four fish, started the fight but they were able to twist off, and I had plenty of blowups as the fish hit the bait short too.

These fish are extremely strong, they produce a slime coating once stressed and are very difficult to hold. Caution should be noted here, I recommend landing the fish using a net, then securing the fish with a good pair of lip grips. Being sure to secure the grip around your wrist, I saw a big fish lost yesterday by one angler as the fish twisted and started thrashing around just to fall into the river and swim away, with the grip still in its mouth. Be sure to have on hand a good pair of long nose pliers too, snakehead have teeth.
