Mallows Bay

Type: Tidal
Region: Southern
Location: Mallows Bay

I fished Mallows Bay yesterday (6/7/19) with my buddy Rich. He had never fished off of a kayak and wanted to fish Mallows, fish off a kayak and catch a Snakehead. Unfortunaely, he didnt catch a snakehead but two of the three wishes were granted.

We put in around 9:00, and started working our way to the back of the feeder creek to the right of the dock. We were casting top water frog, beetle spin and Whopper Plopper. The first fish we caught was a 22 1/4 snakehead. We continued casting parallel to the arrowhead plants lining the creek, in two foot of water and were able to draw the bite from the fish. He took the Whopper Plopper with a large explosion and headed back into the marsh. I pulled the fish out of the heavy cover using 30lbs braid tied directly to the bait. (I will normally not use a fluorocarbon leader when using top water baits.)

We then worked our way back out of the creek and into another feeder creek off to the left of the bay. There we caught four largemouth bass on wacky worm and beetle spin.

Fishing our way back to the dock I noticed surface action in open water. I cast a beetle spin dressed with a white twister tail and caught another bass. We wrapped it up at noon with five bass and the one Snakehead.
