Mackerel Species of Maryland

Type: Ocean
Region:
Location:

Anglers should be aware of the various mackerel and and small tuna species that visit our coastal waters. Atlantic "Boston" mackerel have already run past our coast in March and April, and are now being replaced with chub mackerel and other species, including Spanish mackerel during the summer months. This picture ID fact sheet from the Mid-Atlantic Fisheries Council will help to ID the various mackerels and small tuna species such as bullet, frigate, and skipjack tuna which are easily confused.

Also, NOAA will be accepting comments on the Atlantic mackerel fishery until July 8. For more info on how to comment, go here.
