I caught this gar last week in the Pocomoke River during the late afternoon. My rig consisted of a weighted float, live minnow ,and a circle hook. It measured out to approximately three feet long. Just out of curiosity, could these fish be the reason why snakeheads are seemingly absent from the Pocomoke?
DNR Response: That's a nice catch! Longnose gar are definitely an important predator in Pocomoke River and Potomac River. In some cases, when resources become very limited, predators could compete for resources and one species might be outcompeted and, in the case of snakehead, be prevented from establishing a population. Unfortunately, snakeheads have been reportedly caught from Pocomoke River for at least the past two years. It's likely they are in the early stages of establishing a population so it's possible that anglers will more frequently catch them in the next 10 years, so be on the look out!
