Went bowfishing from a jon boat in the shallows of Pohick Bay on the Potomac River on Memorial Day. Managed to arrow a 28 inch long Northern Snakehead in about a foot of water at low tide. My first bowfishing success! Took it home and had a very nice fish dinner! Funny anatomy, kind of cross between an eel and fish, so I filleted it like I would a striped bass. Cut along the down along the dorsal fin and backbone (well, what looks like a backbone), peeled it back down to the tail, flipped the fillet over and took off the skin. First time eating a Snakehead. It's ugly, but delicious! Thin cut slices, pan fried until crunchy on the edges with some garlic salt, sprinkle of dill, and a splash of lemon juice. Very good eating! I would definitely like to keep on taking these fish.
DNR RESPONSE: Thanks for helping us to lower the population size of this invasive species in Maryland. Drop us info on the catch with a picture that clearly shows the fish is dead every time you kill one, and youll get entered again fs for helping out the bass population and the Potomac River ecosystem!
