Brother John Limits Out

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Central
Location: Podickery Point???????????

Pulling into the boat launch area at Sandy Point State Park Wednesday morning the noticeable shortage of parked trailers told the story. The days unfavorable weather conditions kept all but the most stalwart of anglers staying on land. The high temperature would reach 64-F, waves were 1 ft. changing to 2, the wind SSE 10 mph with gusts to 20 and 100% chance of rain. These are not ideal boating conditions but does have the potential to give way to a great, or foolish, fishing opportunity. Seeing that only 3 boats launched ahead of us that morning, John and I reveled in the fact that wed have the whole upper bay to ourselves.

Pulling out of Mezick Pond, we cleared the jetty and set a heading north toward the Sandy Point Lighthouse. Reaching 25 feet of water, we dropped four #2 diving planers and let out 40 feet of line and as we did the rain the weatherman promised began to pour down. Each planner pulled a 5 Luhr Jensen Pet Spoon attached with an 8 ft. leader line, 3 of the spoons were gold and the fourth was green.

As we passed the lighthouse a small scattering of birds, about a dozen, was spotted circling a wide patch of water over Podickery Point. Of course, we headed right for them and on approach, ZING! Oh, what a sweet sound, ITS ON! The port side forward most line had a pull down. As John leaped out of his seat to tend to the rod, I grabbed the net and within minutes we landed a healthy 22-inch Striper. Circling back around and using the birds as our guide, we crisscrossed the water staying in between a depth of 16 to 30 feet east of green cans 3 and 5 and each time we turned north we got a pull down. Within the hour we reached our limit. Not wanting to get drenched to the bone by the continuous rainfall, we called it a day. It was a very successful day 22, 22, 19 & 19 in the box and all 4 fish bit on a gold spoon.
