I recently returned from seabass fishing trip offshore of Ocean City ,Maryland. This was a late trip on the Morning Star heaboat. The captain wanted to schedule it late to avoid rough seas. We left before 9:00 am only to return late at 6:00 pm. The journey to the fishing grounds was long, at least 3 hours. A few seabass were caught only to be interrupted by spiny dogfish, sometimes two at a time. Captain Monty Hawkins moved several times only to have the same problem repeat itself. The seabass fishing would start out ok then the spiny dogfish would take over. Many people caught more spiny dogfish than seabass. The mates did the best they could to unhook them for the customers and toss them back. My biggest spiny dogfish was at least 4 feet long though by the end of the day I managed to catch 9 keeper seabass. Lets hope Monty Hawkins can find a dogfish repellent for his customers!
