Fishing off of Point Lookout

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Southern
Location: Point Lookout

My buddy, Julian Tsai, asked if Id like to fish the Potomac River for striped bass with him and our mutual friends, Phil and Tim. Of course was my answer.

We met at 8:30 a.m. at the boat ramp in Piney Point and headed up the Potomac River. We were looking for fish on the depth finder and birds feeding along the way. The few fish that we did catch were small. Then, by chance, a friend texted me and said that she was down my way fishing off Point Lookout and catching some nice fish. She also reported that gannets were feeding and the birds were amazing. We pulled our lines in and headed down river.

Once we entered the bay, we started chasing birds and casting 2oz steel jigs. I also was casting Rapala Jigging Raps (yea they are ice fishing jigs, but hey, they work on rockfish too!) in 42-45 foot of water. A majority of the fish were on the bottom with the larger fish up in the water column. A few of the bigger fish had sea lice, and they were notably thinner.

In the end we caught well over 100 fish with over 30 of them keepers. It was a great day of fishing with friends and, boy, was the weather nice too.
