I caught a 3lb 11 oz healthy, well-fed fish at Loch Raven Reservoir on Monday 2/17. While walking the banks, I found a bluff wall with boulders and submerged trees kissed by sunlight along the main lake channel. 50 feet depths were within my casting range.
I landed this bass on a low-profile deep diving crank in a shad pattern and was hooked suspended near the tree cover about 15 ft. deep. It hit very softly but definitely attacked the lure. I think it was a healthy female filling up with eggs. She had been eating well too because her belly was fat and swollen. Her mouth was considerably red from eating crawfish I assume? She also had odd markings on her tail couldnt tell if they were permanent or abrasion marks. She was released safely at catch location.
