Potomac River Musky

Type: Nontidal
Region: Western
Location: Upper Potomac River

I took the day, 5/18/20, to target some musky on the upper Potomac River. I met up with my buddy, Julian Tsai and we drove the two and a half hours north. There we met up with Captain Jon Griffiths of Potomac River Trophies. We loaded up his sixteen foot Lund with our heavy fishing gear. Starting our float trip at 11:00 a.m., casting big baits with heavy rods.

It wasnt long before Julian had a fish, catching the musky on a black/blue colored glidebait. The fish pulled drag and the fight was on, it was netted, photographed and released quickly. We were stoked and ready for more action.

We continued to cast into eddies, around various spring feed creeks discharging into the river and across deep holes. Throwing whopper ploppers, glidebaits, large plugs, bulldawgs, spooks and blade baits. At the end of each cast and before we pulled the bait out of the river wed do the classic figure eight. On one of my figure eights with a large gold and black colored plug a 35 musky came up from the dark below and the fight was on, the water blew up. Captain Jon grabbed the net and I had my first musky! Wow what a day. We both landed a fish in the boat!

We only had one additional encounter with a musky. That fish followed a yellow bulldawg to the boat and passed passed over my bait several times but no bite. Ugh. In the end we concluded the fish were still at the upper portion of the drift. Most likely finishing their spawn. My fish was a rather beat up male due to his spawn. We cast for smallmouth and walleye as well but without success.

It was a great day!!
