While using live minnows or small jigs is an effective way of catching black crappies, this time of the year is perfect for using fly fishing tackle. I fished Broadford Lake last week using a lightweight fly rod and the same flies that were on the leader from an earlier brook trout fishing trip. The crappies took the dropper fly which was a gold beaded caddies larvae imitation, and giving the fly some action by "swimming" it a little bit triggered the bite. The indicator elk hair caddis also saw some action with some good sized bluegills. I caught plenty of fish for a Memorial Day family fish fry.
