A Rainy Weekend

Type: Nontidal
Region: Southern
Location: Indian Creek NRMA, Calvert Cliffs State Park

The weather over the past few days hasnt cooperated at all. But I took advantage of a break in the rain to I run out and cast for largemouth bass.

Saturday, 8/15, I drove up to Indian Creek NRMA to fish the pond. I walked back, but found that the road leading back is washed out at the culvert that serves the ponds discharge stream. So, I took a cut through a field and climbed the back side of the ponds dam. After arriving I was surprised to find three other anglers. They hadnt caught anything up to that point, but while there I saw one of them lose one bass at the shoreline and catch one on a spinner bait. I worked my way around the pond casting a white chatter bait and a wacky worm. I caught a bass on each bait. I only fished an hour and a half because the pond was out of its banks and it was difficult to fish.

Sunday, 8/16, I ventured over to Calvert Cliffs State Park. I expected to possibly be the only person there. Wrong! The place was packed with families walking the trails back to the beach. And it was raining, hard at times too. I had my rain gear on and hip waders too. The families I saw were in shorts, tees and either flip flops or walking barefoot through the mud and flooded trails.

I took a few casts with a wacky worm in the pond before heading back to fish the marsh. I only caught two small bass while I was there. I ran into a couple of young anglers fishing the open water near the beaver dam. One of them was Richie Bowen, he caught a bass and small snakehead while I was there. Fun, but a wet weekend.

Remember to find something other than striped bass to fish from now and until August 31st. Lets all do what we can to help protect the bays stock of striped bass.
