After a rainy weekend, I dropped my kayak in to Mill Creek for a few hours of fishing. Although the creek was very muddy I managed to catch thirty one fish. Most of the fish were caught on a beetle spin with a few on a 1/2oz jig with a four inch paddle tail. Catching 21 white perch, one bluefish, four puppy drum (red fish) and the balance bycatch striped bass.
Although I did not target the striped bass, because the season is closed until August 31st. They are in the creek and eating, so I moved on after I hooked a fish, never removing it from the water or photographing it.
The bluefish were a surprise in the creek, catching one fish and losing a few, they were eating the tails off my plastics. Ugh! The red drum are getting bigger in size, catching one a little over 13 inches. Losing a much bigger fish. I am hoping that the fish will be within the slot by late next year or the following year. Fun!
I drug up and headed in at 12:30 but not before one of my buddies, Julian, called and wanted to take his boat out for a run. I said sure and my grandson Isaac and I met him at the public docks in Solomons. We ran out to Cedar Point looking for working birds or fish on the depth finder. Seeing none we ran over to and across the wreak just south of Cedar Point. Seeing fish we cast vertical and conventional jigs. Still no luck. We headed back to the Patuxent River and took a few cast at the bridge pilings with beetle spins. Hoping for a few perch. Isaac caught the only fish (which Ill never hear the end of) before we called it and headed back to the boat ramps.
It was a beautiful day but a tough fishing day.
