Some Mahi-Mahi Fishing

Type: Ocean
Region: Eastern
Location: Ocean City

Last year, after a trip offshore for Mahi-mahi, Lenny Rudow (of FishTalk fame) and I talked about me possibly fishing for them from a kayak. But as thIs weird year moved forward I started to wonder if the trip would ever come to fruition.

Then I got the call from Lenny, the weather on Sunday the 6th would be perfect. Plans were to meet at 5:30 and head to Ocean City. Zach Ditmars and I were to work on the logistics of kayak type, safety and best boat to fit on Lennys Glacier Bay. I reached out to Zach and we settled on a Peddle kayak rather then a paddle. And a kayak with a wide beam but shorter, so as to fit easily on the boat. Zach had the perfect kayak, in his large collection of yaks. (Yeah, he has lots.)

We reached OC and excitement was in the air. We loaded the kayak and gear on the boat then set out, the weather was perfect. The sea had a big roll and as we went out further and the wind and whitecaps kicked up. At over 30 miles out we found no fish so we headed in looking for the fish. Then the decision was made to fish flounder.

As we headed in Zach spotted Mahi. And the sea, for some reason at that moment, laid flat. Zach took a cast and caught the fish. We then started to chum the nearby bass pot. Seeing more fish the decision was made to drop the kayak. After a coin flip Zach was up, fish on, then it was my turn with Lenny to follow. We all caught fish and rotated through the order.

What an adventure. And great fun with great friends!
