Fletchers Hickory Shad

I made the run into the city from Solomons to hunt for Hickory Shad on Tuesday 3/23. A friend told me he had been catching a few Hickory Shad. So I grabbed my gear and drove the 1.5 hours to Fletchers. Parking in the upper lot I trekked up river and in sight of Chain Bridge.

It didn�t take me long, casting small shad dart and small spoon tandems. The run isn�t at its peak yet but there are catchable fish. I�ll run back up there when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom with my 5wt fly rod. Great few hours of shad fishing today. If you haven�t tried it these fish are great fighters, they�ll come out of the water and pull hard.

Remember to handle them gently and release your catch. Hickory and American Shad are protected and catch and release is only permitted.
