St Marys River State Park

Type: Nontidal
Region: Southern
Location: St. Mary's River State Park

I fished St Marys Lake Saturday, 10/30. I'm staying away from tidal water for the next few days.

I met up with two friends, Darren and Julian. Darren was already on the lake when I got there and Julian came after I had been fishing for a while. Darren had already caught a bass.

I looked for crappie and largemouth bass in the main body of the lake, where I had found them the past few times I fished the lake. Seeing fish on the meter but they werent biting. So I headed over to fish the rip rap off the dam and spillway.

Since I was catching no fish off the spillway I fished the rip rap at the dam. There I found fish feeding from the south end of the dam to where the water changed from 62 to 61 degrees, about 250 feet north of the discharge intake in 5-8 of water and ended up catching nine bass along the dam on a small square billed crankbait (see photo)

Julian showed up and we started to fish for crappie. I had see that there was a school of fish concentrated on the north west corner of the concrete discharge intake. I dropped a small white twister tail with an underspin. No luck. I then changed to small chartreuse jig used for hickory shad. I dressed it with a white and chartreuse grub.

I began dropping the bait straight down between 2 and 10 over the fish I saw on the meter, then very slowly lifting and dropping the rod tip. I left there to seek out bass elsewhere after catching 12 crappie. I headed up the big cove which is right up the lake a short distance. There I caught more bass. I needed to leave so I said my goodbyes to Julian, one bass and one crappie later for him.

I stopped to say goodbye to Darren too. He had caught one pickerel on a jerk bait and six largemouth bass on drop shot.

My catches:

  • 15 largemouth bass with several lost, all on crankbait
  • 12 crappie on the chartreuse jig and grub
