Some Bay Fishing

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Southern
Location: Chesapeake Bay

My friend, Julian Tsai, invited me to fish with him and his friend, Mike Popp on 12-1-21 out on the bay. We left out of Solomons and headed to buoy 76. We saw a few birds but they stopped feeding shortly after we saw them. We ventured over and found a small school of fish and caught three or four in 38/40 of water before the bite ended.

We then headed to the power plant. There was only one other boat there and then a charter boat showed up. We fished there for no more than an hour, and caught only one trout, a 22.5 fish and a striped bass. The other boats didnt stay long either.

From there we headed up to buoy 78A. There were 13 boats there when we arrived. A few guys jigging and others trolling. The trollers were using white umbrella rigs. Some were pulling planer boards. From what I could tell the boats with the anglers jigging were dropping metal jigs. We approached slowly and soon found out the fish were deep. We dropped metal jigs up to 70 feet. Most fish were on the bottom with a few fish suspended around 50. We were dropping baits when we found fish. Then wed drift until the school moved on or we drifted off them.

We caught between 45 and 50 fish. Most were 14-18. We caught and kept three keepers out of the 8 or so we caught.
