Point Lookout State Park

Type: Chesapeake
Region: Southern
Location: Point Lookout State Park

This morning (9/17) I met three friends at the ramp at PLO state park. We launched our kayaks and headed out towards the inlet before 7:00am. We were fishing there for a few moments before I saw birds working on the Potomac. We headed out and started casting under them, the birds moved on but I continued to catch striped bass on 1/2oz jig with a 4 white paddle tail. Only a few keeper size, most being under 20.

We then followed birds along the beach, casting under them and catching bluefish. Most were 9-10 fish but a few bigger ones in the mix.

The morning bite was pure mayhem. But, most of the fish were smalls. The bluefish killed my two Zman paddle tails I had on the kayak so I moved on to fish near the lighthouse. There I caught three red drum. Only one keeper size. Catching a variety of other species too. Two of the other anglers hooked into and fought two speckled trout to the boats but they came unbuttoned trying to land them.

We then headed out to the ledge across and north of Cornfield Harbor. Finding only a bluefish here or there. Then we found mackerel porpoising, but they wouldnt play. So we headed back to the inlet and fished the jetties. Catching additional trout, bluefish, striped bass etc.

Species caught today: Lizardfish, bluefish, striped bass, needlefish, black sea bass, puffer fish, perch, spot, croaker, red drum, and speckled trout.

Baits were gulp minnows and squid on shaky head jig, paddle tail jigs and sabiki rig. And a jerkbait.

Gene Wright caught some spotted seatrout. He caught his three trout on 4 inch Zman sexy mullet with a red quarter ounce jig head.
