I got the opportunity to visit and fish Smith Island the weekend of May 19th. I was invited to help judge the 2nd annual Smith Island Fishing Tournament. While I was there I took a few casts around the island.
Taking the Capt. Jason (the Red Boat) over to Ewell. The Captain, Terry, made it easy for me to load up and transport my kayak over and back from the mainland. The conditions werent the best, a little wind and some rain made it for a few hours of difficult fishing. However, I did manage to catch striped bass and speckled sea trout on jigs with either a plastic paddle tail or a fluke.
If you havent visited or fished the island, you're in for a treat (Smith Island cake too!). They have well marked kayak trails, follow them then seek out holes, take a cast and enjoy the marsh birds, muskrats and most of all the fishing!! And dont forget to paddle past goat island too!
