Snakeheads Caught July 1st

Type: Tidal
Region: Southern
Location: Near Mattawoman Creek

Hello DNR! My name is Bao, I live in Fort Meade, MD. I would like to thank Greg Valenta for his information on the pond near Mattawoman Creek. I wanted to catch a snakehead since I heard about them. I asked my buddy Zach to come fish with me and we traveled more than 1 hour on July 1st to reach the pond that Greg described.

After a few casts with a SPRO brown frog I hooked my first snakehead!!! It was 14 inches and a little bit over a pound. As the sun went down we decided to fish for 10 more minutes before going home. All of sudden I got another hit!!! This time we could tell it was a bigger fish. It was splashing and gave me a good fight. The second snakehead was 21 inches and 3lbs. They were killed and later on put on the grill. A couple of bicycle riders stopped to look at the fish and were kind enough to take a picture of Zach and I.

As we loaded our gear back in my SUV we heard a BIG splash, we turned our head toward the pond and saw the side of a HUGE snakehead as it dove down to deeper water. We will go back one day and try to catch it!

I encourage fishermen to go to that pond and try to catch a big Northern Snakehead fish, they are fun to catch and good to eat!
