Youghiogheny River Fly Fishing

Type: Nontidal
Region: Western
Location: Youghiogheny and Casselman Rivers

I fly fished the catch and release section of the Youghiogheny River in the morning of July 4. It was a slow, disappointing morning with almost no fish action on the river; usually I can at least see or scare away some trout. I had one or two strikes with brown and black nymphs but did not catch anything. I even went far from the parking areas hoping to find some larger trout. At noon, the water level started rising and the river became murky. I learned there was a scheduled water release when I saw the parking area fill up with kayakers and rafters.

After using the wader bath station at the Yough and breaking for lunch, I fly fished the Casselman River that afternoon and finally saw a few trout. However, they were picky and not hungry for my flies so I was only able to catch and release two smallmouth bass and a chub. I am attaching a photo of one of the smallmouth bass.
