Bluefin Tuna Update

From June 6, 2011 to July 4, 2011, 258 bluefin tuna (BFT) have been tagged in Maryland. The average length of these fish was 38 inches. For the same period last year, 214 bluefin tuna were reported. The total of BFT landed since May 1, 2011 stands at 357; in 2010, 218 BFT were landed by Independence Day. The bluefin landings have slacked off as more anglers target the plentiful yellowfin. Only one billfish has been landed thus far and that was a blue marlin brought in on 6/11 weighing 450 pounds with a length of 108 inches.
