Surprise Walleye
Type: Nontidal
Region: Western
Location: Upper Potomac
Today my father, son and I were fishing for smallmouth on the Potomac river just upstream from the mouth of the Monocacy river. We had a great day cathing 16 smallmouth of various sizes and then Dominic, age 14, hooks up on a whopper of a walleye. We estimate it was 24” long based on the size of the fish grippers. He was using a paddle tail swim bait. Unfortunately I was unable to find my measuring tape so the size is unofficial. Either way, it is a unique fish in an area where you don't usually catch walleye. It was released unharmed.
